Question

Boxie and Boxie & Mak
I have a 18mo old femal boxer ever since I got her she has been sick w/bloody exsplosive diarea I had taken her to may vets they couldnt figure out what was wrong w/her. 2 week ago she got ahold of a dead salmon so I took her to an emergency vet and told them what was going on w/her she only weighted 40lbs and she looked awfull. I told the vet that if they could not figure out what was wrong w/her then I was just going to put her down, it was not fair to her she was so skinny. The vet consulted other vets and they figured it was probly ulcertive colitis, she has been on the meds now for 13 days and now weighs 56.8lbs. She is eating so much and I need to know how much she should weight so she don't get 2 fat. she also keeps loosing patches of hair & thats been since we have had her also we thought she maybe allergic to beef and it worked for a while and now it is happening again. We love her so much and she is my 5yr old daughters best friend and my 2nd child, I really need some advice Thank you so much for looking into this for my family.

Answer
Do not ever worry about her getting fat. She has had health problems that caused her to be underweight to the point of being skinny- and nature will allow her to gain to a regular weight for her- and maintain it.

Boxers are allergic to a variety of food things; do not give her a dog food with corn and glutens.

Find a all natural or organic dog food: lamb and rice (brown rice) or chicken and rice (brown rice) or any all natural brand that is for allergic dogs and even sensitive stomachs and skin.

You can give her an all natural sweet potato dog food to clear her up- then add a little chicken and rice or lamb and rice to it in order to gradually change the food over to 100% chicken or lamb and rice.

If her hair doesn't grow back soon with this diet, or she continues to loose hair- talk to your vet. They can do a skin scraping and look at it under a microscope. It might be a type of mange and not food allergies at all. The diet will soon tell.
