Question
Hi Angela,

I have been looking for a white Boxer pup for a few weeks now, but in the process of my search I've been told by friends that the white Boxers are a bad choice due to health problems that come with the recessive genes.  Is there any merit to this concern or is it mainly hearsay?

Thanks for your help!

Steve

Answer
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your question concerning white boxer dogs. It is a common myth that white boxer dogs have more prevalence of health issues. There is no scientific evidence to confirm these claims. They are however prevalent to deafness and can sunburn easily. My experience has been they are just as healthy as their colored counterparts. All dogs can carry recessive genes. With that in mind I think the following website can be helpful to you as well: http://www.lsu.edu/deafness/deaf.htm . When viewing this site keep in mind that the boxer and dalmatian are similar for genetic deafness. I personally would not choose a white boxer puppy whose parents were white as this could exacerbate the problem by doubling up on the recessive genes for deafness. Make sure the parents are health tested at a minimum for heart and thyroid problems for any boxer puppy you choose. Also have the breeder take the white puppy to the vet and confirm whether or not it is deaf. You call the vet to confirm it,don't take the breeders word for it.You could also consider the Baer hearing test.If you are able to go see the litter take a "clicker" with you and click it in the presence of the puppy, you will be able to see the ears move if the puppy can hear. There is another myth in my opinion that colored boxers can be prevalent to deafness, I can tell you that I have never in 40 years seen a colored boxer who was deaf and found no scientific evidence of this claim. Most white boxer owners I have dealt with never realize their boxer is deaf because it usually is bilaterally deaf and has adapted well to their environment. The white boxer is just as much a boxer as the colored boxer and will make you a fine companion just remember the sunscreen ! If you choose to get a deaf boxer they can easily learn sign language and it is a rewarding experience too. I hope this information is helpful to you.
Sincerely,
