Question
I am wondering after whelping should I keep a heat lamp or heated blanket in the area the pups will be kept for that first week or so until they can regulate their body temp

Answer
Yes, and I recommend to continue after they can regulate their temperatures while winter and cold.

Of course, once they begin to chew- you cannot risk a heating blanket as they could chew the cords... But as long as they are a week to two weeks old, it is okay. A heating lamp is good. I recommend they remain inside a temperature regulated house, not in a garage or basement.
