Boxers/Box Hair loss at 7yrs old?

Question

Jacks
I have a rather healthy 7yr old male. The last week his hair has started getting rather thin along his body. Now he has never had much hair on his belly or inner thigh. I used a different shampoo on him about a month ago. My other boxer seems to be fine. It looked at first like he was shedding. Not sure what direction to go..

Answer
Excessive shedding can be caused by a number of reasons: thyroid problems ( a vet can check his blood and do a T4 test, microscopic mange (their are many types) or heat and summer shedding.

Food allergies can cause shedding too, as well as shampoo. I suggest for sensitive skin (all Boxers) use Dawn dish soap. It is mild and non-irritating and rinses well.

Also, be sure his dog food has NO corn and NO corn glutens, or any type of gluten. Boxers are sensitive to that. And his bedding- if he sleeps on a dog bed- can cause allergies too. Environmental can cause allergies and hair loss.

Try the healthy food; maybe a chicken and rice at first (no corn- no glutens) and use Dawn dish soap to bathe. If he hasn't improved within a few weeks, ask your vet to do a T4 blood test for thyroid conditions.
