Question
hi
my 11 months old boxer is not protective.recently while i was walking with my boxer i was attacked but he did not do anything rather he was willing to play with the attacker....can U please explain this weird behavior??please help me

Answer
Hi Shalin,

The boxer is too young to understand, boxers do not mature until 2 years of age. They are not naturally aggressive. Your dog is a juvenile and still in the playful stage. If the attacker showed friendly gestures with the dog then the dog sensed no real threat. The boxer must be trained to be a protection dog because they are a hearing guard dog naturally, they alert to strangers by barking but are not a highly aggressive breed or protection type of dog like Dobermans, Shepards, etc until they mature and /or trained to be and it must be a real threat with the intruder showing no friendly gestures. It will also depend on the prey drive the dog has, each dog has a different level of prey drive, the boxers with high prey drives make the best protection dog, the boxer with the lest prey drive makes a fine family pet. Thank you for your question.
