Question
Our 5 month old boxer has milky colored tears about 3 times a day.  He does not seems bothered by this but I am wondering what is the cause?

Answer
Hi Carol,

Usually the eye discharges are harmless and it is part of the body’s natural defense system to rid the eye of irritation or foreign matter, however some causes are serious like bacterial infections. A thinner, clearer and less-crusty discharge could be the result of allergies and usually goes away once the irritating factors are eliminated. Allergies to food, pollen, dirt, dust, winds, dry eyes or even an eyelash can cause an irritation which could lead to the discharge and are the most common. Many canines are allergic to carpets and household cleaners.

More serious causes of eye discharge can be associated with medical conditions such as Conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers or bacterial infections. The discharge associated with more serious conditions will be yellow or green in color and will require medical attention.

Thank you for your question.
Sincerely,
