Boxers/Anal Sacs

Question
Hi Renee,
I have a 5 year old female boxer that has an anal abrasion that looks similar to human pimple/boil.  We just noticed it yesterday by accident as it is located just under her tail and she continues to lick it.  I was told it could be a result of the anal sacs.  I understand that some dogs can break these sacs on their own while some will need help.  However, if these sacs are not broken, there is nowhere to release this discharge and as a result you will see this pimple/boil appear.  If this is the case, are we now past the stage of releasing this discharge or can I do something on my own help with this situation.

Thanks,

Gary

Answer
Hi Gary. If you have never emptied an anal sack before, then I strongly suggest that you take your girl to the vet, and allow them to show you how to do it. It's easy to hurt that area on a dog. She may even need some antibiotics to help clear up whatever that is on her rear. Once a vet shows you how to do it, you should have no problem doing it yourself in the future. It's super messy, and stinky. Good luck!

Education/Credentials
I took a two semester course to become a vet assistant. I didn't go further in it because I had a child.
