Question
Hi,

I have never boxed in my entire life and I a going to fight in a NYPD boxing charity event.  Do you think 6 weeks is enough time to train for it? Also, Is it a dumb move to get in the ring with no experience in front of about 3000 people?

Answer
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the questions.
I've refereed at about 20 such events...out here in California they're called "Battle of the Badges," where various law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel, etc., box for charity. In fact, I officiated at such an event this past Friday evening.
My observation is that the more time one has to prepare, the better. However, more important is that you are matched with another person of similar size, age, condition and experience. You're not a real boxer, and your opponent should not be one, either.
You'll probably have lots of nervous energy early, but once that wears off, fatigue can set in very quickly, you might want to pace yourself.
There have been very large, enthusiastic crowds at each and every Battle of the Badges I've attended, and I'm sure your event will be no different. You'll probably get more support and encouragement from the audience than you could imagine.
Just remember to protect yourself at all times, and have fun!
Thanks again for writing, Chris...let me know how it goes!

Regards,
Lian
