Question
Hi Jackson! I am 24 y.o. southpaw and just started to box about a month ago. So far I starting to really progress! However I have been researching boxing techniques and different things to really get into the sport because I really would like to go pro someday, but I came across this article saying that southpaws have a hard time making it in boxing because nobody wants to fight them, so my question is do you think it would be best to start training as orthodox? Thank you for your time and sorry such a long question!

Answer
Hey Jesse,

No way. I disagree with the article. It's an advantage to be a lefty. It makes you unique and marketable as a pro. If you fight righty you just throw yourself into a giant mixing pot. They can't avoid you forever. You keep winning and they have no choice but to fight you. If people dodge you they lose respect as a pro, respect is money.
Now, if you can fight orthodox effectively it would be beneficial to learn as you could switch up in certain situations. But, you want to have one style that is your bread and butter. Stick with lefty and learn all the tricks of being a lefty. You'll love it.

I just started a new site for amateur boxers. It has lots of good info. Check it out when you get a chance.
