Question
I was wondering if there is a specific time to start amateur boxing. Like if there is a recommendation on how long I should have boxed before doing amateur. I have done boxing for about 5-6 months now and I am planning to get my amateur license in January. Is that too early? Any recommendations?

Answer
Daniel,

A good time to start boxing is in your early teens, 13 or 14. But it's not a necessity. You can start up to the mid 20's and still have a very good amateur career.
It's not to early. Just because you are a registered amateur does not mean you have to fight. You can register and just train until your ready to fight. Although, keep in mind that USA Boxing registration runs on calender years so you'll want to register early in the year rather than late so you can take full advantage of your yearly fee.

good luck,

Experience

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
