Question
Hello I am 13 years old and really want to start boxing. I live in London England in the Surrey area.

Do you know any good gyms that you recommend i should join that are situated close to me?
Roughly how long will it be before I start competing as an amateur?
Roughly how many amateur fights will I have to fight before i hopefully turn pro?
What kind of workout do you recommend I do to get in shape?

Help will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer
Peter,

Since I live in the USA I could not direct you to a gym near you. I can only tell you to contact your local recreation department and ask about boxing programs.
After you start training, you should have your first bout within 2 months.
Get as many fights as possible before turning pro. I would get at least 60 before turning pro.
The main thing is to get your running down. Running is how you get in shape. You can do weight training as well to increase your strength. Stick to dead lifts, bench press and power cleans.

good luck,
Jackson

Experience

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
