Question
I have started coaching my son in boxing, I understand that I am not a professional, what certifications do I need to coach him and get him armature fights without being a member of team. I need information and assistance as soon as possible, my son is training for a fight in April, but I hear that he can not fight unless he has a level 1 certified coach. We are both amateurs and this is the sport my son chose please help me help him live this part of his life to the fullest!!!

Thanks
Tomas and Son

Answer
Hi Tomas,  You need the level 1 certification. USA Boxing governs these certifications. Each area of the country has an Local Boxing Committee. Every committee makes it's own rules although they are usually similar to one another. Normally one of the gyms that are member's of the LBC in your area will hold a class for coaches to become certified. It is usually a golden gloves gym. You take a multiple choice test after short seminar. You are certified and your card is sent through the mail.
What you will need to do is contact your local LBC and find out which gym near you is holding the next class. You can also ask them if you can take the exam at home without attending.
Go to usaboxing.org and click on "members". Find the LBC in your area and contact them about getting certified. If they have no number, use a neighboring state as they will have contact info to lead to the right people.

My trainer/boss of 24 years is in the Golden Gloves Hall of Fame and trained the heavyweight champion of the world. Experience

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
