Question
OK here goes,
I am 19 yrs old and have been training for a long time to box. i love boxing it is my passion and i wouldn't give it up for anything, i recently started training at the closest gym to me but it is a MMA gym. and the trainer, though great as a fighter and person he is, is hugely into ground stuff i.e. brazilian jujitsu and UFC stuff. i on the other hand do not wish to do UFC. my trainer and i have spoken many times of competing but i still haven't gotten to fight and it doesn't seem like he is trying very hard to find a match either although he says i am ready. it's very discouraging. so i have two questions. should i leave my gym to find a pure boxing gym? also, what should i go about doing joining Golden Gloves in Texas. i am closest to San Antonio.

thanks you for your time and effort in answering my questions-Mikel

Answer
Hi Mikel,

Yes, I highly recommend you move out of the mma gym if you really want to advance in boxing. MMA is far removed from boxing and you will never learn the technique you need to be an accomplished fighter. Yes, get involved in golden gloves and you will be taken through the proper levels of training. Plus all the real boxing connections for amateurs is through golden gloves. Go to usaboxing.org and click on membership. Find the boxing committee nearest you in Texas and contact them. Tell them you want to compete. You should be on your way.

Good Luck,

Jackson

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
