ok my 9 year old son has been boxing for southpaw boxing club in owensboro ky for 2 years he has 3 state titles his record is 9 and 0 he recently got two tkos in the first round each fight he is real proud hell we all are but he wont take up for himself outside of the ring he lets people walk all over him he says because he is afraid that he will hurt them but he lets kids punch him in the face and everything any advise and also how can i prepare him for is first lose he is the beast at the gym and everyone tells him he is the best and so on and so on he is getting a big head i don't want him to give up when he loses a match i tell him every match do your best that is all that matters that you will be a winner no matter what if you try your hardest he is good no great it will take someone to beat him he has fought in sparing matches with 11 and 12 yr olds and came out well on top please how do i prepare him so he doesn't give up

Hi Laura,  sorry for the delay.

You are on the right track but also tell him that all these fights are just preparing him for when he turns open as a senior. Right now he is fighting in juniors and the truth is, it's all really just practice until he reaches 17 and becomes a senior division fighter. So a loss is just a way to get all your kinks worked out before hitting the big time.

This is the best angle I have found to take with youngsters. If you lessen the importance of the fight, it takes the pressure off of them and they normally relax and fight better.

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
