Boxing/Hand Injury

Question
I have recently hurt the third knuckle (the one that sticks out the most)on my left (rear) hand. I first noticed it when I used wraps for the first time. I normally use gel gloves under boxing gloves. There is no swelling or bruising and range of movement is fine (except for morning after a boxing class, when it is just a bit stiff). It only hurts when I punch, but is painful enough to stop me from wanting to hit pads or bags. I am wondering if you have experienced this, and have any idea of any treatment, and/or how much rest it needs before testing my hand out again. Any suggestions are gratefully received.

Answer
HI Sam,

Yes I have experienced some hand pain problems, where some punching hurts it and some doesn't. YOu could have a small bone bruise in there on the knuckle. The most proficient fix is to stop all punching for a while to let it rest, as you can still do shadow boxing.  Then after a few weeks, start some light tapping/punching with thick padded gloves, letting your hands adapt over time to the contact. I'd stick with non-contact fitness activities, shadow boxing and technique work. YOu'll get your power and timing back for contact quickly, but if you keep punching now it will most likely get worse.

good luck and hope this helps.
