Question
I'm a student at UT and will be entering the SAE boxing tournament in the spring 09, but have not received prior boxing training. I'm 20 years old, 6'2 185, played varsity basketball and track. Anyway, if I want to start training in the fall, what steps would you advise to take as far as both training on my own and signing up with Golden Gloves in Knoxville. I would like to pick up boxing as a long term hobby not just for the tournament as I have always been a boxing fan, I just never had anywhere to train before coming to Knoxville. Thanks so much in advance...

Answer
Hi Brian,

The main thing you can do on your own is cardio. You want to save the gym time for working on your skills. Try to decide somewhat early what weight you want to fight at, of course you may have to wait and see where your brothers are fighting so you don't double up.
The only thing you will need to sign at GG is a info sheet the first day you come in. If you decide to fight GG you will need to wait until after  you have competed in as many SAE shows that you want as you cannot do both at the same time or go back to SAE after fighting a GG show.
There is some good info for SAE fighters at:

see you at the gym,
