Question
hello, i was wondering if you knew how much strength training i should do to maintain 165? currently i do pushups, dips, and shrugs with 60lb. at 5 sets of 50 reps and 5 sets of 100 reps of arm curls with 5lb, each every other day, and the sets go up every 2 months. where should i cut off adding sets?

Answer
Jesse,

It really depends on what your weight is doing now. If you are still losing weight then you should increase the weights and do less reps, Your burning a lot of calories in addition to your conditioning for boxing and assuming you have low bodyfat this will make you lose valuable muscle. If you want to maintain you have to eat enough calories to support your workouts and you have to maintain muscle mass at the same time. In order to maintain muscle mass you have to lift somewhat heavy, 12 to 18 reps. This is more in line with maintaining. Lower will build more muscle and higher will make the muscle you have more cut and developed. If you are following these guidelines and you still are losing weight then you are over training, which means you are doing more than is necessary in your training or your not eating healthy or enough.

good luck,

Jackson
