Question
Hi, I just wanted to know what I would have to do to become a professional boxer. I am taking boxing classes/training right now and I am thinking about going pro in the future. I have taken these classes for about 6 months now. Is there any special training or any training advice you can give me?

Answer
Daniel,

I would highly recommend getting some amateur bouts before turning pro. You'll get some experience and you'll be more marketable.

You contact your state's athletic commission. You'll fill out a form and they'll get a couple of photos of you and you are now a pro boxer.

Get as much sparring as you can and as many fights as you can before turning pro. If you don't, you'll basically be learning how to box as a pro and you'll develop a bad reputation right off the bat. This lumps you into the "opponent" category. The bright side is that "opponents" get lots of fights. The bad side is that those fights are with contenders who are padding their records, so you take a lot of punishment for little money. Work on your defense a lot and have at least one punch in your bag that can knock a guy on his butt.

good luck,

Jackson

Experience

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
