Question
Hi, I am 18 years old right now and a college student. I'm actually gonna start amateur boxing when I turn 19 years old basically. How long do I have to fight as an amateur before going pro? I was reading something and the guy said that he has been amateur for 7 years and is about to go pro now. I was wondering if I have to do it for that long as well.

Answer
Daniel,

There is really no set amount of time you have to fight amateur to turn pro. You need to get as much experience as possible for a couple of reasons. For one, you don't want to learn how to box as a pro because every single fight means something, especially financially. If you lose too many of your first few fights they will label you as an "opponent" which gets you matched against bad-asses trying to pad their record, which also means a lot of punishment early in your career.
I would suggest getting at least 50 fights before turning pro. You can fight amateur until your 34 so you have plenty of time.

good luck,
jackson
