Boxing/Am I too old to box?
Expert: Joe Hofer - 12/14/2009
QuestionI just turned 43 and have been active all my life. I played contact sports on and off when I was younger and never really excelled at any as I often lost interest. I recently joined a boxing club just for fitness but after only a handful of sessions my trainer says I box as if I have been doing it for years. I have always worked out by myself on various fighting styles due to my occupation (former bodyguard and currently work in Security management)I was in many a brawl when I was younger and fought martial artists, boxers etc and have only ever lost a two or three fights. I learn things very easily and am physically strong although quite short and stocky. I move quite quickly for my weight (90kg). I like to believe That I have a natural aptitude for boxing although I am under no illusions. I would still like to try and take this further. What do you think... can it be done, has it ever been done? I have never boxed as an amateur but physically I am probably 10 years younger than guys my age. I also feel that because of my age I can concentrate more. For example when I train i don't seem to be bothered by fatigue and pain as much as i did when i was younger. I also have more composure and experience so i don't panic when I am being punched and I also "read" opponents better...
Am I clutching at straws here because I really feel capable but its a question of whether the industry would accept me without the mileage?
AnswerTo box competitively may be difficult. I do not know what the rules are where you live but in my state the amateur cut off age is 31. I am like you though and feel there should not be restrictions but breaking in at that age would be very difficult.
