AboutLian Shoemake Expertise I can answer questions regarding rules for both pro and amateur boxing; upcoming bouts; fight analysis/predictions; various other questions. I am an experienced amateur boxing official with USA Boxing (14 years) and I have completed a yearlong professional officials` clinic with the California State Athletic Commission.
I am 27 years old. I have been a life long boxing fan and always wanted to participate in the sport, but for one excuse or another never took it up. On my 26th birthday I decided wow I am not getting any younger and my window of opportunity is nearly closed. On that day I decided for the next year I would train physically for the sport and spent 5 days per week running and weight training. Now the 2nd part of my goal is between my 27th birthday and one year from now.
I have no no dilusions of being a Golden Gloves Champ or turning pro. My goal is simply to enter and compete in an amateur tournament. If I lose my first fight I lose. By competing I will have reached my goal. My question is what exactly do I need to do to enter. I do not belong to a gym or have a professional trainer to enter me. What are my options and how exactly do I do it?
Thank you very much.
Jon
Answer Hi Jon,
Thanks for the question.
You need to get in touch with your USA Boxing Local Boxing Committee (LBC) and register as an athlete. Once you've done that, you can learn where the registered gyms (and coaches) are in your area, and when upcoming sanctioned amateur bouts will take place. You will need to have a certified USA Boxing coach in your corner to participate.
To find your LBC, go to www.usaboxing.org, click on Membership Services, then follow the directions. You can locate your LBC in the "LBC Directory" link, and there should be a contact person listed.
I hope this helps, Jon.
Thanks agian for writing!
