Boxing - Hi Joe. this is a long rant of more than 1 question. i hope you have time :)
Question I'm an Australian amatuer, just turned 18 years old this week. i've been training to box since i was about 14, stopped for a year, n started again at 16, though unfortunately, i havent been under 91kg since i was 15 and dieted down to 88kg for a bodybuilding competition. this made it impossible for me to get matched with anyone even close to my age. i now sit at about 6'2 and 104ish kg with i think translates to 230-250pounds somewhere.
i recently entered to compete in a state championship as a junior boxer, but all other competitors pulled out due to flu after weigh in. instead i fought in the open age category and defeated my 29 year-old opponent by TKO as he retired in the second round after knocking him down twice.
my main questions are difficult, i have the opportunity to fight at australian golden gloves, but at this point my boxing gym doesnt have a trainer, i mostly trained myself for state titles and my only sparring has been with a 110kg professional kickboxer/mma competitor and an 80kg recently retired pro boxer. i havent been on a pad session in about 3 months and my dedication is growing dim as i feel without a trainer i wont improve. i was offered to train with the australian top boxing team, but im still completing my last year of high school.
do you think it is possible to get anywhere without an actual trainer? i learnt much from watching mike tyson and dave tua, but i dont feel id pick up on everything.
also, as i trained in muay thai, i prefer a more square stance, as it gives me the ability to throw my right cross almost as fast as my jab, my jab harder but still sharp, and my left hook and uppercut with far more power than my right. as i said, i do watch mike tyson ;).
final question, i find that being a bigger person, running long distances does do some damage to my shins/knees. would i gain the same benefit from skipping one 30 minute round rather than 6 3 minute rounds as a warm up?
Answer Your questions may seem complicated and long but the answer is simple. No I do not believe you can be truly sucessful without a trainer. You could try that form of exercise to protect your knees but the real truth is when you spar, do you have enough stamina.
