Question
I am 47 yrs old and my experience in boxing is as a spectator only.  My nephew, by marriage, has asked me to manage his professional boxing career.  He is from outside of the US but has a US Visa issued for him to travel to US to compete in boxing.  Do I need a license to manage a professional boxer and how do I let promoters know he is available for boxing at the professional level?  He will be based in San Jose, CA.

Answer
Gino,

You don't need a license for manager although if you plan on being in the corner in any capacity (even on the floor) you need a license from the state your fighting in.

There are different ways to let promoters know you have a fighter. You can go to their websites and use their contact information. I would have some footage of your fighter ready because they will probably want to see your guy in action. You can tell a promoter all day long how great and talented your boxer is but that's what the other thousand managers are telling them too. A very small percentage of those actually have the tools needed to compete at top level.

I would definitely register your information at boxrec.com as this is the main source of records for all of pro boxing.

If he has some good boxing ability (or is a big puncher) you could try to get him on a venue that has a monthly or bi-monthly show. If he gives a good first impression they will probably invite you back on a regular basis.

good luck
