Question
Hey,
My trainer recommended i get a mouth guard as I will be sparring in 2-4 weeks, and should start wearing it now during pad and bag work to get used too it.
What I would like to ask is should I go to the dentist and get a custom fit Guard, or is one from the chemist/ sport store and simply boil it ok?

Many thanks in advance should you choose to answer this question

Answer
Aiden,

What you need for boxing is a mouthpiece that will stay lodged in your teeth when you open your mouth. In a perfect world boxers would keep their mouths closed for the entire fight. But that just doesn't happen. When you get tired you tend to open your mouth for more oxygen. So it either falls out or gets knocked out.

There is a mouthpiece sold at ringside.com that comes with a powder, a liquid solution and a small mixing stick. You mix it up and it slowly starts to harden. You put it in your mouth and bite down about halfway just before it sets up. After 5 minutes it will have made a mold around your teeth. It is spongy but durable. It stays lodged in your upper teeth when you open your mouth.

This is what I would recommend.

Good Luck
