Boxing/illegal alien wants to compete

Question
Hi Melanie,

I am a conditioning coach for a beginning boxing coach. My background is mainly martial arts. We have a student who recently told us he wanted to jump into the amateur ranks, but is an illegal alien. Would he still be able to compete or are there alternatives? Thank you for any help given.

Answer
Hi Eric - he will be able to register with USA Boxing as long as he has a birth certificate.  He can box at local shows and in non-advancing tournaments only.  His coach will also have to be registered with and certified by USA Boxing.  Please let me know what city and state you live in and I'll send you a contact.  You can email me at mel@amateurboxing.com.
