Question
Hello,
I am an amateur boxer from Europe. I have been on the national team since 2007, although unfortunately, I never got to do any World Championships... I had a serious motorbike accident in September 2010; I planning to be able to go back on a ring in 2 to 3 years at the latest (I am 25). One of my "dreams" was to go and live in the USA for 6 months or a year or so, so I was thinking, why not turn pro in the States?! First of all, would it be possible? How could it be done? Would I need a permit or something (or a green card at best)? Or is it better to remain an amateur? In that case, are there scholarships that could help (I could learn how to teach french for instance)? What would the medical examination require (I am a concerned about my injuries and wether doctors in the USA wouldn't let me box)? Sorry about the too many questions, but it would really help to get an answer!!

Answer
My first answer is - if you're going to stay amateur, you need to remain where you are.  In order to turn pro in the US, you will need to get here on some kind of visa - takes several years or more to get a 'green card.'  You'd be able to compete here, but you will need a manager and will have to get licensed by whatever pro boxing commission handles pro boxing where you will be living.  And you will have to undergo a physical exam before getting licensed.
