Hi, I'm wondering how you determine what weight class a person fits into. Recently my cardio boxing trainer suggested that I join the fight training group and I'm all about it.

I am a 5'4", 26 year old female and I currently weight about 120lbs. Someone told me that I'd have to go down to 108lbs to compete. This sounds a bit unhealthy for me, but I'm not an expert.

Hi Alex - First of all, in order to compete in sanctioned events you will need to be registered with USA Boxing as an athlete (membership fee January to December, and you'll need a copy of your birth certificate and two passport-type pictures).  Exact weights are only crucial for tournaments; in local shows you can box anyone who is 8 pounds lighter or heavier than you.  The tournament weights for females in your current weight range are:  Featherweight 119; Lightweight 125 and Light Welterweight 132.  If you are interested in becoming a USA Boxing member, please email me at mel@amateurboxing.com and tell me your city and state.  I'll send you a contact.
