Boxing/How to get started?

Question
Hey Jackson,

Im 23 years old and i've been boxing for 7 years. Im amateur right now with very little fights (10 wins, 2 losses) my coach doesn't like taking us out to fight so i only get to fight about 3 times a year. I live in an area where there aren't many boxing gyms and none of them take boxing too seriously. I know I can become a great fighter one day but I feel like i'm not getting the training I need. I train 4 days a week, and run for 45 mins 4 times a week. Many coaches from other gyms tell me I can make it big but who will take me there? My coach doesn't want anything to do with pro, so should I move to another province? Or USA? I feel like im just a waste here and I know i got alot of talent. How will i find a promoter?

Any help would mean alot to me
Thanks,
Jordan

Answer
Jordan,

In the USA there is a baseball, basketball or football program in every town of every state. And since those are the top 3 sports the scouts will seek out the talent no matter where they are. Boxing is different, you have to be somewhat proactive. There have been a ton of talented boxers that nobody has ever heard of because they just faded away.
I'm not saying you've got 'it' or don't have 'it' because I've never seen you in action and I don't know if you have a fighter's mentality. But I do know that "you" believe in yourself and you believe you have it, so you need a coach who can train you up to your fullest potential whatever that may be.

You might try getting with a gym or a trainer that has your best interest in mind. Part of what a coach is suppose to do in any sport is give the athlete every opportunity to pursue his dreams and if he cannot get him there himself then he should point you in the right direction.

I am not suggesting you move for boxing. The chances of making a serious living boxing is on the low side. Never look at boxing as your only ticket to success!  You need to pursue a trade or a formal education first and make boxing the cool thing you do on the side. What I am suggesting is that you get all your priorities in order and 'IF' you 'NEED' to move, let it be because of school or a great job and get with a solid coach in that town for your boxing.

good luck

If you have been actively training for 7 years you should have at least 70 fights.
