Question
Hi,my question is what is the order in which to get to national competition, which comes first the state championship or regional s? Is it different in the golden gloves than say USAs boxing tournament. I have gotten many mixed answers about this and maybe you can simplify this the answer for me. Thank You. TIM

Answer
Tim,
I can help you.

There are four amateur boxing organizations. Military Boxing, PAL Boxing, Golden Gloves and USA Boxing. Although there can only be one governing body with one set of rules, so USA Boxing is that governing body. So all of these organizations operate under guidelines set by USA Boxing.

Each of these four have a tournament every year. In order to get to the nationals of each one you first have to win the local qualifier or "districts". Then you advance to the Regionals or "box offs", then you advance to the nationals.

If it's a pre Olympic year (like this year), winning any one of these 4 nationals will advance you to the Olympic Trials for a chance to make the Olympic Team. In the USA Boxing Tournament you only have to be a semifinalist to get a bid to the trials. This is the only org that does that of the 4. The other 3 you have to be the champion.

Of the four tournaments, the most prestigious to win is the National Golden Gloves.
