Question
Hie:
I'm 30 years old and I have never boxed or trained as a boxer. I'm thinking of starting amateur boxing hoping to turn pro, do you think this can be possible? I have played football so my fitness is not a problem at all. I can adapt to any training regime and when I was around 67,70KG (my weight), I used to deadlift 185kg, push 110 kg on chest press and chin ups or dips with 20kg weight on my waist I can go on for a minute and i also used to squat 160 kg all these free weights.I have stopped training 3 years ago and i'm thinking of boxing. I feel i have strength, speed and will to do it and i would like to hear from you because you know this field very well. I have never touched beer or cigarettes in my life.  Thomas

Answer
Thomas,

A pro boxer usually has a career lasting into their mid to late 30's. The better defense and conditioning you have the longer your career.
It takes years to become a quality boxer and unless you have an amateur background you will not be taken seriously by the folks running the pro game, unless, you start beating people your not suppose to beat and compile a decent record.
I'm not suggesting you don't try it. But I am sure you want an honest answer. So let me tell you what I would do it I were you and had me heart set on it.
I would get as many amateur fights as I could for 2 years (over 25 bouts preferably) and at the end of two years I would reevaluate where I'm at. I would consult with my trainer for an honest opinion and if I had good success and I'm still feeling it, I would turn pro at 32 or 33 and see what happens. Make sure you have a trainer that cares about your well being and who also knows his stuff.

good luck
