Question
Hi Mr. Rose,

Do you have any general advice for a someone who bobs and weaves a lot while sparring? Are there things I should avoid doing or things I should keep in mind?

Also, do you have any advice on fighting taller opponents? It seems that no matter how many jabs I slip or no matter how hard I try to move in, they're always out of range for my hooks or punches. What's a good way to deal with a tall boxer (style)?

Answer
Austin,

You have to be first behind the jab or you have to master your timing to counter. When you come in behind the jab you have to explode in and be first. If you are slipping your way in you have to counter immediately after you make him miss and this takes lots of work on your timing. If you hesitate, he'll already be gone out of range.

Get on the mirror and work on slipping and firing, bob fire, weave fire... you may only get a couple shots off before he moves, but if you land them you can hurt him and he won't move, he'll stay there and cover up.

Move your head the bare minimum, don't duck way down, it's a waste of time and energy, you need to slip quick, and then punch. Keep your jab busy even if it's not hitting him, it will throw off his rhythm and open up opportunities for you.

good luck
