Question
Hey. I want to be a boxer/ professional fighter of some sort, I always have. I don't know why, I just enjoy fighting/sparring and have been decent at it the couple times I have. I'm 6'1", around 160 lbs, 18 yrs old. I've had some training here and there, through wrestling, and other martial arts, but usually had to drop because of finances, moving, or it impeding on my work hours. I'd like it to be more than just a hobby. I was wondering if there was any advice, tips, info, or just overall inspiration you could give me. Thanks.

Answer
Jeremy,

I am sending you a link to some boxing gyms. Choose your state and then look at the list of gyms near you.
If you really want to box competitively you should choose a gym that is associated with one of these three:  P.A.L. (Police Athletic League), Golden Gloves, USA Boxing.
Stay away from health club type places, MMA/boxing combination gyms and things of this nature.

You are a good age to start boxing. You will train until your coach feels you are ready fight. You'll fight as a novice and eventually turn "open" which is the advanced fighting level. Usually you have 10-15 novice fights before going open.

The best thing you can do on your own time to prepare is running and lifting. Lifting is not a necessity but rather a bonus in boxing. Running is a must.

Going to a boxing gym the first time might make you a little nervous... don't be. 80% of the guys in the gym are novice or even brand new like you. Don't procrastinate, just dive in and have fun.

good luck

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
