Question
I seen just the Golden Gloves Tournament on websites, is there any pre amateur fights before you compete in the tournament? Also I read about Paul Williams turning pro only after 20 amateur fights, is it recommended turning pro after 1 or maybe 2 yrs amateur or not?

Answer
As a registered boxer, if you have 5 or more scored bouts in your passbook (walkovers and unopposed don't count), and your coach thinks you can handle national-level competition, you can enter your local Golden Gloves tournament in the open division (advancing).  If you don't have any experience, you can enter in the novice division (non-advancing).

I actually would not recommend turning pro with less than 5 years amateur experience.  The more national tournaments and international events you compete in, the more saleable you are as a pro.  Most boxers who have a short amateur career end up as club fighters in local pro shows.
