Question
Hi I'm 14, 15 in November. I come from England. The thing is i love boxing. When i went to my local boxing gym the coaches was shocked with my power. When i watch boxing i get this feeling like i won't to be there. When one opponent turns into a punch i just love it. i can't really explain it. I'm 5 foot 10 and 11 stone 11 lbs. I want to drop to 9 stone 13 pounds. What i want to know is do i have to join a gym to fight ameture and do i need a gym to become pro later on in life.

Answer
If you want to be competitive in amateur, and later pro, boxing you will need a trainer who can teach you the basics and make sure you don't fall into any bad habits.  Gyms are the best place to train as they have all the equipment you need and other boxers for sparring.  As a non-citizen, however, you won't be able to enter into any advancing tournaments and will be regulated to local shows and those tournaments that are not ranking/leading to national or international competitions.  If you would like an amateur contact in your area, please email me at mel@amateurboxing.com and tell me the city and state you live in.
