Boxing/Boxing garb

QuestionDear sir,
I have enjoyed both amateur and professional boxing as a spectator for some time now, but one thing has always puzzled me. Why is it that male professional boxers fight shirtless and amateurs must wear vests? Has it always been this way? I understand the need for amateurs to wear headgear, but why the vest? It seems to offer no protection whatsoever.
I would be grateful if you could answer this if possible.
Sincerely, Diondra.
AnswerHi Diondra,
Thanks for the question.
There are a few reasons why shirrs are required in amateur boxing.
One reason is to clearly identify the boxer. Since headgears are required, which obscure the judges view of a boxer's face, and amateurs are matched with opponents of similar age and weight, they really can look very much alike without some clear way by which to distinguish them frome one another, such as the shirt.
Secondly, the shirt does provide protection from rope burn, so there is a safety component.
Additionally, the shirt helps to absorb sweat from the boxers.
And finally, the shirt helps distinguish amateur boxers from professional boxers. The amateur sport and the pro version really are quite different.
I hope this helps, Diondra.
Thanks again for writing!
Regards,
Lian
