HI Danish,

to make your jabs more powerful, you need to work on several things, such as jabbing technique, Arm strength, and punching speed.

Jabbing technique. Work the technique slow, and try to eliminate any wasted movement. Focus on two things, first, a "power jab" with the full weight shift behind your effort. A hard jab can hurt your opponent. Also work the "flicking Jab", which is more defensive with less
weight shift. This one scores points and keeps your opponent back, but won't necessarily hurt him if it connects. (Normally, you set up the 3 and 4 punch combinations off the flicking jab, gathering power and speed with each successive punch in the combination.)

Eliminating wasted motions helps focus your power quicker and also helps you to NOT telegraph the punch. Work the "power" and "flicking" jabs in all planes of movement, that is going forward, backward, sides (both sides) and circling. Do single, double and triple jabs. do them slow, feel your weight shifts and concentrate on your balance to help flow with the weight shift.

For Arm strength, work the shoulders and triceps ( pushing) muscles of the arm.  Do Barbell and Dumbell exercises for this.  Also, If you can, use heavier training gloves. See if you can purchase the bigger heavier gloves for training. this will help increase arm and punching strength.

to increase speed, set up some timed workouts.  Using a heavy bag or speed bag, see how many jabs you can do in 30 secs. then try and increase the number ( better start with 15 secs). Increase the time over several workouts and as your punch numbers go up during the interval, try heavier gloves.

and finally, one of the best ways to increase your jabbing is to "Jab a lot".  the more you use it, the better it should be.  but ONLY if your technique is solid.

Check out speedbagcentral.com for more training information using the speed bag.

Answer
Hi Danish,

If you can't hit your opponent with your Right Fist ( jab or Cross) than perhaps he knows you are going to throw it and he gets out of the way. Maybe you are telegraphing your punch, or letting him know right before you throw it. Practice throwing your right ( and left also..) as a quick single motion. No wind up or "duck" or "weave" before you do. Work on punching without having an give-a-way warning that it is comming.

Good luck and I hope this helps.
