Question
Hey Jack I am new to boxing and I have no clue about how to get into a league or how to be ready for it. I am, however, extremely interested in the sport and wish you could guide my way. I'll be in college at green bay is it to late to start? Will I be slaughtered in the ring?
Hope to hear from you soon...
-sam

Answer
Hi Sam,  You will not be slaughtered in the ring... they will bring you along slowly and only when they feel you are ready to spar will they put you in the ring. The safety of the fighter should be the number one concern in any gym.
I do recommend you find a golden gloves if possible. They have the best knowledge and usually the best trainers. Go to www.goldenglovesofamerica.com and click on frachises. See if there is one near you. Call down and ask what the hours are. They should provide everything you need to workout except a mouthpiece and handwraps, but they probably seel them at the gym ...about 10 bucks a piece... or go to www.ringside.com

good luck and thanks for the question,
jack

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
