Boxing/Hanging a 100lbs Heavy Bag

Question
I have a 100lbs heavy bag that I want to hang in my garage. I'll be using it for punching, kicking, knees and elbows. Ideally I'd like to be able to move all around it, but I'll  survive if that's not possible.

Unfortunately this bad boy has ripped out of every ceiling joist I've screwed it into with a 1/2" x 4" eye hook. The garage rafters are 2 x 4's which, from past experience, I know will not work.  Would spreading a steel beam across two rafters and hanging the bag from the steel beam work? Also, would it help to attach the bottom to the floor with a chain? Would hanging the bag from a spring/coil help too? Thanks.

Answer
HI Bob.

Geez. If your 100lb bag has ripped out several attempts at using the 2x4 rafters, I wouldn't have much confidence in using them again in any configuration. I personally don't think adding steel between your 2x4 rafters is going to make them any stronger, it will just move the stress points. I would suggest your going to have to use either 4x4's or some other much more sturdy set up than 2x4's. Without seeing the garage and wood, I can't really give any advice on how to do that except to say I would find another way to hang your bag. perhaps with a bag hanger from Titleboxing http://store.titleboxing.com/heavy-bags-heavy-bag-accessories.html
or Ringside boxng http://www.ringside.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=2385

I don't think a spring to the floor will help the wood be stronger, and a spring at the top of the bag will be nice but still won't make the 2x4's stronger. I believe A bouncing 100lb bag will need a heavier duty hanging system.

Good luck with your bag and garage situation. Sorry I couldn't be more specific.

sincerely,
