Question
How do I become a boxing Judge, I'm currently in the army and deployed to Iraq, I'm stationed at El Paso, Texas. I know I will have to start in the amatuers and work my way up, I'm just hoping to get started and can study the rulebook while I'm in Iraq, and can get started when I go back to El Paso. Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Levander,
Thanks for the question, and moreso for your service.

To get started as an official in the amateurs, you'll need to register with USA Boxing as a non-athlete. In El Paso, the Local Boxing Committee (LBC) you'll need to contact is called the West Texas Association. Here's the contact person:
West Texas
Juanita Silva
(432) 362-5254

There are certain training and certification requirements, but you'll be able to learn the rules and practice at local boxing shows. You may already know that the USA Boxing rulebook is online at www.usaboxing.org, so you can review it there.

I hope this helps, Levander. Thanks again for writing, and be safe in Iraq!!

Regards,
Lian

I can answer questions regarding rules for both pro and amateur boxing; upcoming bouts; fight analysis/predictions; various other questions. I am an experienced amateur boxing official with USA Boxing (14 years) and I have completed a yearlong professional officials` clinic with the California State Athletic Commission.
