Question
Coach Rose,
I am 29 years old and have been boxing for about 2 years. I am 6'2 and 195lbs with only two amateur bouts. I go to the gym 3 to 4 times a week and work out for 1 and half to two hours. Including stretching, push ups, pull ups, running stairs, bag work, sparring, etc. I believe I have an excellent coach but he is really old school and does not believe in weight training. I played football in college and have done some lifting but none since I began boxing. Previously you suggested that by increasing my lean body mass It would also help increase my speed. What would be your recommendation on how to increase my lean body mass.

Answer
Hello Scott,  when you work out, start yout reps at 12 and drop weight each set. Increase your reps by two each set. Also you need to try and get your bodyfat below 11%. That would be running and jumping rope. Do not diet, you will need the calories to support the extra work your doing. You can still watch your fat intake and simple carbs.

Let me know how it's going..... best of luck

Experience

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
