Boxing/Novice Equipment

QuestionI am just getting into boxing, and I'm looking into purchasing some bag gloves and sparring gloves. If you could please tell me what to look for when I'm shopping, and if you could recommend any brands or gloves in particular. Also what is so special about the Cleto Reyes brand?
AnswerHi Jason,
Thanks for the questions.
I'm not sure if you're just getting into boxing for fun, or if you're looking to compete and advance in the sport, but either way, quality equipment is important. If you're hoping to compete, then I'd suggest working with a coach on basics, like conditioning, defense, proper form, etc., before you even begin sparring. Safety first!
Depending on your age and size, you'll probably want to go with 14 oz. or 16 oz. sparring gloves (competition gloves do not come in those sizes). Grant and Everlast are high quality, and Title products are good.
Make sure that you get a form-fitting mouthpiece, a properly -sized groin protector and a 12 oz. padded headgear as well (again, safety!). You'll want to get good handwraps, too (Everlast has nice ones), and learn how to wrap them properly. Of course, I'm describing the ideal situation to you, and if you were to purchse everything I've suggested, it could get pretty expensive pretty fast. However, just don't get inferior equipment, and definitely don't try to box without the proper safety equipment.
Like I said, ideally you can work on basic techniques for a while before you even start sparring; in the meantime you can save up for the proper equipment, if money is an issue.
Reyes brand gloves are not particularly special, but some professional boxers and promoters prefer them because they have a reputation as a "puncher's glove." The padding on the surface used to be spread a bit more thinly over the punching surface, supposedly making punches feel harder.
Their materials are good quality as well.
I hope this helps, Jason.
Thanks again for writig, and have fun!
Regards,
Lian
