Question
Hello, About to upgrade to a nicer speed bag platform, and wondered if it is worth paying extra for an adjustable platform, or just to purchase the non adjustable one? Also what size drum would you reccomend 24inch or 30inch?

Answer
Hi Barry,

An adjustable platform is really helpful for two main reasons. First, if several people of much different heights use the board, ( for example: people over 6 feet tall and people under 5 feet 8 inches). This large a difference in heights will require an adjustable board.

Second, If YOU change bags of several sizes. say you use an 12x9 large speed bag for power, and then like to use an 8x5 for speed work. It will be easier for you to adjust the board up or down to get the bags set to the proper height. With a non-adjustable board, I would recommend set the board up for the larger bag, (hangs longer) and you could step up on a small step platform to use a smaller bag. Personally I prefer adjustable boards, but they are more expensive.

The key is to get the Belly of the bag (fatest part) level with your mouth or chin. This makes it easier to use correctly.

the size of your drum (board) is really dependent on the size of the bag(s) you will use. A 24 inch board can be used with bags that are 11x8 or smaller. A larger bag will extend past the edge of the board - and I don't recommend that. And a larger board will be slightly heavier and rattle less. Of course, the larger ones are more expensive. The drum size may also depend on where you are going to hang it, for the larger boards come on heavier duty speed bag wall units, and require a stronger wall, with more room for the board to hang.

I have used 24 inch boards successfully for many years, but also have a larger 30 inch board unit also. I'm afraid the end result for YOU is a matter of cost and preference, as well as amount of use it will have. If a lot of people will be punching on it, I would go with the heavier duty units.

One last tip: IF you board (of whatever size) vibrates and shakes, put a sandbag or two on top.  The sand will absorb the punching force and the weight will help hold it steady.

Good luck with your purchase and thanks for your question.

sincerely,
