Boxing/Starting boxing while overweight

Question
Hi,

I am 23 years old an am interested in starting boxing, for fitness and to see what I am capable of. I am 5'4 and 215 lbs, which is pretty big for my height. For my weight, I am in good health, and am physically able to jog 3-4 miles. I know it's a fact that the weight will come off as I get into better shape, but how do trainers handle boxers who have to take off a lot of weight to go down to their natural fighting weight? Would I be paired with sparring partners closer to my weight or my height? How much weight would I have to lose before reaching a weight class where I would be able to safely participate in actual competitions? Even in the middle or light weights, I'd be giving up significant inches in height and reach.

Also, what is the risk of brain damage in amateur competition? I know there is headgear, but getting hit in the head is still getting hit in the head. I am actually a graduate student, so my brain is my livelihood and I am worried about the risks.

Thanks,

Dan

Answer
Boxing is dangerous at any level and can result in brain damage and or death.  Generally most injuries are minor, but you never know.  Your weight is hard to determine because I do not know your bone structure.  Most fighters at 5 ft. 4 in. are in the lighter weight classes such as featherweight to lightweight.  Boxing is measured only in weight classes and height is not considered when competing.  You will probably need to be an effective inside fighter to perform at your maximum peak.

Thanks,

Joe
