Question
QUESTION: I am 20 years old 6 foot 150 pounds. I live in Connecticut which  is not a huge boxing state, well then again no state is a big boxing state now a days. Well I'm asking for advice on where and how to start out and hopefully begin a solid fight career. All I've been doing is training on my own in my own gym, now what? Thanks for the advice!
ANSWER: Hi Dave, I highly recommend finding a golden gloves gym. This is where you will break into competition and the amateur boxing world. They are the best organization in boxing in my opinion. They have good trainers and all the info you need to get registered and start competing. Go to goldenglovesofamerica.com and click on franchises. Then look for a location near you. Call them and get there hours. Just show up one night and ask for a trainer. Tell him you want to be an amateur boxer. I give you a little tip too, don't go in and say you just want to use the facility to workout. Tell them you want to be an amateur boxer, otherwise you won't get much attention.

best of luck,
Jack

QUESTION: I read over your advice and went to the golden gloves website and found out there are no locations in Connecticut or even close. What next?

Answer
Dave,  Boxing locations have always been a problem because it is not a mainstream sport. Although hope is not lost. Contact the number below and ask them what you need to do in your state to fight "unattached". It is not uncommon to fight without a team for the exact reason you are experiencing. You may have to train on your own and then pick up a corner worker at the tournaments. Give them a call and see what they say....
