Boxing/What advice can you give me on turning pro?
Expert: Lian Shoemake - 8/23/2007
QuestionHello Mr. Shoemake,
What kind of advice can you give me on becoming a pro boxer? I have been boxing since i was 12 by my father. I have never stepped foot into a gym. Mainly because the nearest gym is about 2 hours away. I have trained all my life and I am in top shape. Finally, I have graduated from college and I am ready to make some history in boxing. I have boxed many times but it has always been in homemade rings and backyards. Anyway, What I am asking is I am 23 yrs old and now ready to start somewhere. How and where do I start. Who can I trust to take me to there and where do I find this help?? Any information is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks again.

AnswerHi Jason,
Thanks for the question.
My first piece of advice would be to start by competing as an amateur. Even though 23 is relatively late to start a career in boxing, you'll have the opportunity to potentially gain very valuable experience competing as an amateur first. You start by locating your USA Boxing Local Boxing Committee (LBC). You can do that by visiting the USA Boxing website at www.usaboxing.org. (
http://www.usaboxing.org/10_1577.htm is the direct link).
Locate your registration chairperson, who can then take you through the registration process. As far as finding someone to help you, your LBC will have registered boxing gyms with registered coaches. You'll need to get in touch with them and "shop around" for folks with whom you feel comfortable.
I hope this helps, Jason.
Thanks again for writing!
Regards,
Lian
