Question
QUESTION: Hello My name is Rafael Denico and I was wondering where the Golden Gloves Tournament is being held for 2008 and how I can contact someone to be a part of that as an amateur boxer

ANSWER: Hi Rafael - In order to compete in the national Golden Gloves in (approximately) May of 2008 (location TBA), you have to be registered with USA Boxing as an athlete, be a citizen, and have a minimum of 5 scored bouts in your passbook.  You will also have to win your local and franchise tournaments before advancing to the national competition.  If you are not yet registered as a boxer, please email me at mel@amateurboxing.com, tell me the city and state you live in and I'll send you a contact for your area.

QUESTION: Mel, I did get your last e-mail about golden glove boxing. I sent u an e-mail the other day and wanted to make sure you go it. I was telling you that I am moving to LA and wanted to find a good gym. Also I was asking for contacts up there for Golden GLoves boxing. Thank you so much! Rafael Denicio

ANSWER: Hi Rafael - Not sure if I got that one or not.  When are you moving to L.A.?  And I'm not sure what your question is about Golden Gloves boxing.  Golden Gloves is a group member of USA Boxing and has one national tournament a year, with local through franchise competitions advancing to the national tournament (novice boxers do not advance past the local level).  That's the only "Golden Gloves boxing" we have.  You can either keep posting here or email me direct.

QUESTION: Mel, you has said you were going to send me info on how to get registered as a boxer in the state of California. I move to Los Angeles in two weeks. How many fights do I need to have so that I can advance? Or is that up to my coach?

Answer
Do you know what city you are moving to?  We have many gyms to choose from in the Los Angeles area and it would be helpful for me to know which would be the closest to you.  In order to enter an advancing tournament you have to have a minimum of 5 scored bouts (unopposed and/or walkovers are not counted) in your passbook.  You are not technicall considered open until your 11th bout.  In order to register, you will need a copy of your birth certificate (as proof of age and citizenship), 2 pictures (head shots) and a $20 registration fee (for the rest of the year).  You will be able to register at any local show.  If you are under the age of 18, you will need a parent to sign, too.
