Boxing/How do I become a ref?
Expert: Lian Shoemake - 4/18/2006
QuestionI have no connection to the sport of boxing, but I love the sport. What would be the best way for me to become a referee in the state of California and get in the rotation to do any bouts?
Thank you for your help,
Malik
AnswerHi Malik,
Thanks for the question.
First off, I should let you know that being a referee isn't an actual full-time job; most referees have regular jobs and officiate in addition to that. This is not to say that these folks aren't fully dedicated to their referee duties; they just need to pay their bills, too!
At any rate, if you've never officiated before, I would strongly recommend becoming involved in the amateur boxing program for a few years first. The training is usually much stronger, and you'd get an opportunity to develop an appreciation for the duties and powers of a referee.
To do this, you'll need to register with USA Boxing, which can be accomplished by pointing your browser to www.usaboxing.org. Follow the links for membership/registration and obtain contact info for the registration chairperson in you area, and he or she can get you signed up and on your way.You might also check out www.amateur-boxing.com, which can answer virtually any question you might have about amateur boxing.
When you're ready to jump to the pros, you'll need to contact California's athletic commission (
http://www.dca.ca.gov/csac/) . Requirements vary from state to state, but usually you'll need to be able to demonstrate competence as a referee, knowledge of the rules of that state, pass a physical exam and submit an application fee.
I hope this helps, Malik.
Thanks again for writing, and best of luck to you!
Regards,
Lian
