Question
My boxing coach makes us wear long pants when we train and the gym is about 98 deegres. is that smart to get that hot?
thank you

Answer
Hi Babu,

Training under these conditions can be dangerous and I do not recommend it. I do not know exactly what your coach's intentions are but I am assuming he is trying to get you to sweat more. There is a time and place for that, but in 98 degree weather it is too dangerous. For that matter it's dangerous in 85 degree weather. You are losing too much water way too fast, you run the risk of getting dehydrated and overheating. Dehydration can cause many problems. It makes you weak, dizzy, nausea, and you could even pass out.
You will sweat naturally in that kind of heat in normal workout clothes. Even at 85 degrees shorts and t-shirt you should drink plenty of water before and during your workout. Your body will try to cool itself when you sweat openly, but when you are covered in clothing your body can't cool off and this can cause heat exhaustion.

Talk to your coach about your concerns of too much water loss during workouts. Just speak to him respectfully and let him know you might be getting dehydrated during workouts.
Your health and safety is the absolute number one concern.

Good Luck and thanks for a great question....
