Boxing/boxing stances

Question
I just started taking boxing lessons at a local gym, and I am wondering why boxers learn to fight in either the orthodox or southpaw stance. It seems to me that it would be more advantageous to learn both stances and be able to switch during a fight.

Answer
One good reason you do not keep switching is that you never get really good either way, and sometimes you risk getting caught with a big shot when switching.  There has never been a fighter that was really world class that had any success switching back and forth.  It should only be used occasionally to create distance and possibly confuse the opponent for a brief period.
