Boxing/The first punched
Expert: Lian Shoemake - 3/13/2005
QuestionMy son started boxing several months ago and will start sparing soon. He has been a little hesitant to start sparing. The coach hasn't been pushy but has wanted him to start sparing for awhile now. I found a couple websites on exercises to do with him so he can get used to being punched. He likes hitting the bag and all the exercises we do at home and at the gym. Since he enjoys that so much I'm sure when he starts sparing he will enjoy that too. I was wondering if you know of any good web sites on getting over the fear of your first hit or have any advise. Also are there any good web sites on the safety of boxing? As a mom I feel like I must be crazy letting my son go in a ring to get hit in the head : )
AnswerHi Kasey,
I'd recommend that you , your son and the coach have a serious conversation bout your son's interest in boxing competitively. If he remains so reticent about sparring after several months in the gym, maybe competition isn't for him?
It seems as though he enjoys the boxing workouts, such as bag work, etc. Indeed, many people use boxing workouts, less sparring, to stay in shape.
I only suggest this because often, the reverse situation is true: boxers or coaches rush into sparring or competition before they're ready, which is very dangerous. However, someone who is still so leery of actual sparring at this point may not have a genuine interest in participating as a combatant.
Speak with the coach and get his thoughts; my suggestions here are totally speculative since I don't know any of the stakeholders personally.
I should add, though, that it's perfectly natural to not want to get hit :) I'd worry more about a boxer who enjoys taking punches!

Thanks for the question, Kasey.
